Overeaters Anonymous
Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a twelve-step program for people with problems related to food including, but not limited to, compulsive overeaters, those with binge eating disorder, bulimics and anorexics. Anyone with a problematic relationship with food is welcomed, as OA's Third Tradition assures that nobody with a desire to stop eating compulsively can ever be prevented from attending an OA meeting. OA was founded by Rozanne S. and two other women in January, 1960. The organization's headquarters, or World Service Office, are located in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Overeaters Anonymous estimates its membership at 70,000 and it is active in over 70 countries. OA has developed its own literature specifically for those who eat compulsively but also uses the Alcoholics Anonymous books Alcoholics Anonymous and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. People who work the Steps of OA identify themselves as "powerless over food" in Step One. They then proceed to work the other eleven steps of the program in order to gain "physical, emotional, and spiritual healing that we don't hesitate to call miraculous".
